Here in Shanghai, ChinaTravel.net's home base, half the city seems to be receiving a makeover even as people continue to inhabit old buildings that are being overhauled, renovated or simply knocked down. You see construction crews living inside the buildings they're erecting and holdouts living amidst block-wide swaths of recently created ruins in "nail houses," stubborn reminders of Old Shanghai in the midst of the frenzied construction of the new.
So we thought we'd join the frenzy and redesign our site, Shanghai-style. We moved into it a couple of years back and have been fixing it up ever since; by year end, we're planning to have turned this space into a truly unique center for all things related to travel in China.
In the meantime, however, parts of it are shiny and new while other parts are still a bit outdated and funky, and still others are clearly under construction. Scaffolding is showing here, unscrubbed Chinglish is peeking through there, and distorted photos and other passing oddities abound of the sort that often surprise newcomers to China but are yawn-inducingly common to those who have lived here for a while.
Regardless, we're excited about the new look and we'll be working hard this summer to upgrade our forum, add a new features section and create a blog hub where you'll find the best posts from bloggers writing about the experience of travel in the world's most exciting destination.
In the meantime, feel free to drop us a line to report bugs, bad info and bad English. We'll be hard at work, clambering about on the bamboo scaffolding of our site, fixing things one by one.
So welcome to the new China and welcome to the new ChinaTravel.net.... They're works in progress, yes, but the fun is in the journey, so stick with us as we build our new site on top of the old one.
The first person to report 100 bugs to us will win a romantic dinner for two at the noodle shop of your choice with our marketing director in a Haibao suit.
