The Shanghai Hilton (Shanghai Xierdun), located at the northwestern edge of the former French Concession on Huashan Road, lies between stretches two of Shanghai's biggest upmarket shopping streets—Nanjing Xi Lu and Huaihai Lu. It's within walking distance of Jing'an Temple, Jing'an Park and the metro as well as plenty of shops and restaurants. Though comfortable and efficient, the Hilton might not give many travelers the unique Shanghai experience or twenty-first century hotel rush they may crave. Built in 1988 as the city's first five-star hotel, the building is beginning to show its age, and its proximity to the elevated Yan'an Lu highway doesn't add charm (or peace and quiet). Dim sum at Sui Yuan has a good reputation, as does the spa—less for the atmosphere than for the skill and strength of its massage therapists. You can also eat well-regarded Italian food at Leanardo's while being treated to something of a contemporary Chinese specialty—imitation, as a Chinese artist copies DaVinci "masterpieces" right before your eyes. There is also the wonderfully named People on the Water, specializing in Ningbo seafood, and the Penthouse Bar on 39 is as good a place as any from which to view western Shanghai's busy skyline.
