The first foreigner-oriented five-star hotel in Guangxi Province, the Sheraton Guilin (Guilin Xilaideng Dayu Dafandian) is heading toward the "vintage" luxury hotel category, meaning it's still got it, but is suffering a bit from its age. Officially five-star rated, many travelers would only be comfortable giving it four. For what it's worth, the thematic idea expressed in the decor harmoniously integrates a Romanesque lobby with traditional Chinese pavilions and terraces. The location is undisputedly great, overlooking the beautiful Lijiang River to the east and adjacent to charming Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan) in the south. From the top floor of the hotel, there are impressive views over the city. You can walk to many Guilin's attractions and even see a few of them from windows in select rooms. This is your only real luxury option in Guilin, so take it or leave it. Compare it to luxury hotels around the world and be prepared for disappointment; enjoy its opulence compared to your local options and it's a nice place to complement one of China's favorite tourist destinations.
