Another extraordinary addition to China's long list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sanqing Shan is situated in northeastern Jiangxi Province and was inscribed on the world heritage list in 2008 for its "superlative natural phenomena." Visitors to the area are treated to landscapes featuring a wealth of fantastically shaped granite landforms, often resembling human or animal silhouettes. Rapidly changing meteorological conditions create the perfect canvas for nature to contrive arresting vistas full of bright, cloud-penetrating halos and spectral rainbows. Jiangxi's capital, Nanchang, is famed among Chinese for being the birthplace of the People's Liberation Army. Indeed, it was in Nanchang in 1927 that revolutionary heroes Zhou Enlai and Zhu De led 30,000 troops in mutiny against the Kuomintang; today, the date of the uprising, August 1, is celebrated throughout China, and Nanchang remains a site of pilgrimage for patriotic Chinese. Even if revolutionary history isn't your cup of tea, Nanchang has plenty to offer. However, it may be more for what you'll find in the surrounding countryside than in the city itself. Lu Shan, a mountain town situated in the northern reaches of Jiangxi province, is best known for its cool summer days, abundant flora and spectacular views over the Jiangxi plains. Set amongst mist-cloaked peaks, with Buddhist and Taoist temples blending seamlessly with the rugged landscape, its no wonder the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lu Shan is an ideal place to get off the beaten track and explore. After a short walk in almost any direction you're likely to find one of the 200 odd historical buildings scattered about the mountain's craggy outcrops. The birthplace of the Red Army and "cradle of the Chinese revolution," Jinggang Mountain in southern Jiangxi vies with Mao Zedong's hometown of Shaoshan for the title of "the reddest place in China."
