The Yuanyang Rice Terraces (Yuanyang Titian) are a landscaping masterpiece, not only in terms of aesthetic appeal, but in terms of millennial functionality. Perfected over the course of a 1,300 year history, the terraces produce as much as 300 kilograms of rice per Mu (approximately one sixth of an acre). This surprising productivity is achieved by means of an ingenious irrigation system which apportions just the right amount of water to each terrace, and is the result of ancient engineering genius for which Hani farmers are renowned. Astoundingly, this area was so productive that in the sixties and seventies it became a virtual granary, heavily relied upon by Yunnan's provincial authorities to alleviate the famine taking place in inland areas at that time. Global attention to the famine is what would put Yunnan's incredibly photogenic landscapes on the tourist map, its serpentine curves, geometrical alignments and matching natural textures exposed by visiting international photographers. Be it lit by bright blue sky, or shrouded under curling tendrils of mist, Yunnan's scenery leaves an indelible mark on both 35mm film, and the imagination.
