The Shu Brocade Musem (Chéngdū Shǔjǐn Zhī Xiù Bówùguǎn, 成都蜀锦织绣博物馆) is home to a treasure trove of gorgeous silk weavings and screens. Silk is regarded as a symbol of China as much as the panda or kung fu, but the important role played by Chengdu in the trade of silk is less well-known. The quality and sophistication of Chengdu's silk weaving style, known as "brocade," was such that city was called the "Brocade City" for hundreds of years. The colorful Chengdu style seems to embody the hot, humid summers, spicy chilis and beautiful women that the city is famed for and the brocade itself rivals that of any other silk weaving center in China. But it is the colors, light and cheeky, that give Chengdu its very own style, immortalized in this tiny museum on the banks of the Huanhu Creek, very close to the poet Du Fu's Thatched Cottage.
