Shanghai Expo Pavilion: Belgium (Europea...   (Shanghai)

Fittingly, given its centrality to the entire EU project, Belgium's pavilion at the Expo is shared with its Euro-overlords. Of the 5,250 square meters, 1,000 are given over to the European Union.

The pavilion focuses on the theme of "Intelligent Europe," with a giant “brain cell” serving as the entrance to the pavilion (visitors enter via a "vein") and showcasing Belgium's role as one of Europe's key crossing points and gathering centers.

The exhibition inside is divided into four parts, "Building Europe," "Open Europe," "Green Europe" and "Living Europe," which, in turn, walk visitors through the history of the EU, the path to European integration and the economic and social achievements of Europe (such as the euro), successes in environmental protection and natural landscapes, and the lives of local people.

There is also space for each of Belgium’s regions; with highlights including a Chocolate Corner, an authentic Belgian Beer Cafe, and even a Diamond Exhibition Corner. In fact, every week during the six months of Expo 2010 Shanghai the pavilion is giving away a Belgian diamond to one lucky visitor.

Oh, and the pavilion mascots are smurfs!
