Shanghai Expo Pavilion: Norway   (Shanghai)

“Norway, powered by nature,” is the theme of the Norwegian contribution to the Shanghai 2010 World Expo site. Constructed around 15 model trees, made from Norway’s pine trees and Chinese bamboo, it seeks to present something of the natural grandeur of the country.

Visitors can explore five different landscapes: coast (to exemplify sustainable energy), forest (including a tree of knowledge), fjords (the relationship between man and water), mountains (where a business center enjoys grand views) and even a scene from the arctic (to bring home issues concerning the climate). (The arctic section is also where you can sample Norwegian salmon, reindeer and lamb, and drink pure Norwegian drinking water).

The idea is that everyone will leave with a new sense of nature, as a "source of inspiration, recreation and pure physical energy."

The use of wood is quite deliberate, given Norway's rich forestry tradition (Norway's pavilion at the 1958 Brussels Expo was also made from wood). Among other things, it showcases the innovative ways in which wood can be used in contemporary urban construction. The trees will live on after the Expo, either as a group or spread individually around China, to symbolize a long lasting relationship between the two countries.
