Shajiabang (Shājiābāng, 沙家浜) is a small village in Changshu City (Chángshú, 常熟) on the outskirts of Suzhou. Known mostly for it's seasonal output of hairy crabs, Shajiabang is a great place to escape the gourmand-heavy crowds of Yangcheng Lake or the eastern shores of Tai Hu during the November hype.
The area of Changshu City that surrounds the Shajiabang River produces generous amounts of Chinese mitten crabs. Located just upstream from Yangcheng Lake, it's one of the lesser known highlights of crab season in Jiangsu province. Every November when the clawed-critters are at their best, in-the-know travelers and area locals head out to Shajiabang to dine in the relative peace of the upriver reeds and quiet shores.
