The most centrally located of Ningbo’s Buddhist temples, Seven Pagoda Temple (Qītǎ Sì, 七塔寺) is located in Jiangdong district, a short drive from the river and not far from the Sheraton Ningbo Hotel and Portman Plaza Hotel.
Chan (Zen) Buddhist Master Xingjing, previously the abbot of Tiantong Temple, became the first abbot of Seven Pagoda Temple after it was built in 858 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty. According to legend, rebellious soldiers broke into the temple, but were awed by the abbot’s serenity in spite of the commotion and withdrew.
Named for the seven small pagodas in front of the temple, Seven Pagoda Temple also features beautiful shrines, statues, carvings and ponds.
Along with Tiantong Temple, King Asoke Temple and Guangzhong Temple, it is considered one of the four most famous Buddhist temples in eastern Zhejiang.
