Senado Square   (Macau)
0 /0  Users recommend

With the undualting black-and-white mosaic waves of its Portuguese Pavement at your feet and the elegant colonial façades of the Leal Senado, St. Dominic's Church, the old General Post Office and other remnants of Macau's long history rising overhead, Senado Square is an ideal spot to stop and admire some of the finest colonial architecture on view in the Historic Centre of Macau UNESCO World Heritage site.

Known in Chinese as Yìshì Tíng Qián Dì (議事亭前地) and Largo do Senado in Portuguese, the square is flanked by pedestrian zones popular among the Macanese for strolling, exercising, playing games and people watching.

In the heart of the square a large circular fountain commemorates the maritime exploits of the Portuguese with a spherical sculpture that, along with the wave-patterned pavement pays tribute to the central role the sea has played in the history of this culturally eclectic port.

The square sees a lot of action during festivals, particularly Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival and Christmas. At such times, festive decorations and lights turn Senado Square into the ideal stage for Macau's unique blend of cultural fusion.

In October and November, Senado Square plays host to numerous Macau Fringe Festival events, showcasing street theater and experimental performances.
