Located on the Shandong Peninsula, Qingdao has a number of sandy beaches (shātān, 沙滩) lining its coast. Mostly clean and well-developed, the beaches are famous among Chinese tourists, even though the country isn't big on beach culture.
Qingdao's beaches include the centrally located No. 1 Bathing Beach the location of which means it gets very crowded.
Beachcombers and bathers looking for less of a crowd can head to Shilaoren or No. 2 Bathing Beach, although during national holidays any Qingdao beach will have you fighting for space.
