The Ningbo Mosque (Qīngzhēn Sì, 清真寺), also referred to as Ningbo Masjid, was founded in 1003 by Muslim traders doing business with China via the Silk Road. The current structure, located near Ningbo’s Moon Lake, was built in 1699 and is still an active place of worship (so be respectful, especially on Fridays, the Muslim day of worship).
Visitors are allowed enter, though the worship hall in the back is closed to non-Muslims. The rest of the Mosque is built around a series of courtyards, like many traditional Chinese homes. Several large old stones in the gardens are decorated with elaborate scenes, still visible despite the wear and tear of age.
