Reflecting the character of its home city, the main Gulou Campus of Nanjing University (Nánjīng Dàxué, 南京大学) is dotted with old buildings fusing the ivy-covered buildings of a historic western university with the flying eaves of traditional Chinese architecture set along wide-spaced, tree-lined walkways. The lanes along and tracing away from the campus mall, starting at the Great North Building (Běi Dàlóu, 北大楼), provide a scenic stroll with little if any tourist competition.
The university was first established in 1902 as Sanjiang Normal School and went through a number of name changes and reorganizations before adopting its current name in 1950. A number of prominent international figures, including philosophers Betrand Russell and John Dewey, taught at or visited the university.
