The oldest exhibits in the Nanjing Museum (Nánjīng Bówùguǎn, 南京博物馆) date back to the Neolithic age. The museum includes collections of sculpture, pottery, porcelain, Chinese painting and more covering Chinese dynastic history into the beginnings of the People's Republic. Many of the items in the collection are Ming and Qing-era works by artisans from around Nanjing, though many pieces were found after the excavation of a Warring States Period tomb in Jiangsu. Signage in the museum includes English translations with mixed results.
Built in traditional Chinese style with Western elements (though the Chinese elements are more apparent), the museum was established in 1933 and has been renovated numerous times since. These changes included a mock Han Dynasty palace gate added to the museum.
