Muslim Street   (Xi'an)
0 /0  Users recommend

Xi'an's Muslim Street (Huímín Jiē, 回民街) is the epicenter of the city's Muslim community, dating back to the days of the Silk Road.

Lined with Ming and Qing dynasty-style architecture, Muslim Street and the surrounding warren of backstreets make up Xi'an's lively Muslim Quarter, located between the Drum Tower and the Great Mosque.

Featuring countless restaurants and shops—all run by local Muslim merchants— including open-fronted halal butchers (not for the faint-hearted), sesame oil workshops and street vendors hawking all kinds of delicacies, the streets are vibrant and full of life.

An ideal destination for a quick and affordable lunch or dinner, take advantage of the opportunity to try local specialties such as melt in the mouth roast lamb, mutton soup served over crumbled flat bread and noodles (yángròupàomó, 羊肉泡馍) and pitta stuffed with cumin-fried beef (ròujiāmó, 肉夹馍). For a sweeter tooth, local desserts and dried fruits abound with particular favorites to look out for including peanut cakes (huāshēng gāo, 花生糕) and dried persimmons (shìbǐng, 柿饼).
