Humen Naval Battle Museum   (Dongguan)

Reminiscent of a huge warship surging out of the waves, the Humen Naval Battle Musuem is a sprawling, 200,000 square meter (49 acres) complex which details the events of the Opium wars. The museum is split into three main areas: the main hall, the sea wall and the memorial square.

The main hall comprises four exhibits, the first two of which detail the sea warfare waged during the Opium War using media such as paintings and small-scale models. Exhibit number three examines the naval war as it happened specifically around Humen. This exhibit's media are accompanied by flashing lights and sound effects to give the viewer a more immediate, immersive experience of the battles that took place in the museum's proximity just over 150 years ago. Finally, the fourth exhibit is dedicated to educating the public about the dangers of illegal drugs; not surprising considering that opium is associated with the devolution of the great Chinese empire into a foreign-dominated basket case which wouldn't fully recover from its subjugation for over 100 years.

Outside, the museum is surrounded by dense glades of trees and greenery, two lakes, and the Pearl River estuary. From the memorial square, you can get a good view of Humen Bridge as well as the ancient Weiyuan military emplacement. Encircling the museum and the square is a long sea wall - a good place to have a stroll if you're looking for a bit of sea-breeze to freshen you up.
