The Neolithic Hemudu culture thrived in Yúyáo (余姚) near Ningbo over 8,000 years ago. They were among the first cultures to cultivate rice and lived in long stilt houses.
The Hemudu Site Museum (Hémǔdù Yízhǐ Bówùguǎn, 河姆渡遗址博物馆) displays tools, jewelry, remains and recreations of Hemudu life including life-sized Hemudu-style homes. The site, discovered in 1973, features an exhibition area and the original excavation site, the layers of which have been carbon dated to between 7,000 and 3,500 years old.
More Hemudu relics and exhibits can be found at the Ningbo Museum.
