Daocheng   (Shangri-La)
0 /0  Users recommend

Daocheng is a semi-nomadic town surrounded by temples and monasteries set amidst forests and snowcapped peaks. Several spots around Daocheng enjoy excellent views of the Three Holy Peaks of the Yading Nature Reserve—the hill behind town for example—and in all directions forests, creeks and small villages await exploration.

Daocheng-area highlights include the Rupuchaka Hot Springs just to the north of town; the Daocheng River flowing down toward Yading; the Bangpu Temple down the river a way; and the largest monastery in the area, Gongling Temple, which is also on the way to Yading.

Homestays with Tibetan families are fairly easy to arrange on the spot, even in winter. The Tibetans in the area are both poor and hospitable, so be a good traveler and give directly and generously to the community in exchange for a place to sleep and a meal or two.
