Wudang Shan City   (Wudang Shan)
0 /0  Users recommend

A rapidly-developing city of 50,000, Wudang Shan city is a sleepy country town being shaken awake by the demands of an exploding tourism sector. The city's kung-fu schools attract increasing numbers of students, both foreign and local, while word of the beauty of the Wudang mountains and all the temples, pavilions, tea terraces and grottoes to be found among them is quickly spreading.

Around the square in front of the train station are a couple local KTV's, a few hair salons that do hour-long 10RMB hair wash/scalp massages (xi toufa), a couple hostels, a few restaurants and plenty of street food.

For a great massage head to the 2nd floor of the Laoying Jiodian, they do foot soaks and full-body massages for 38RMB an hour.

While in town you'll have plenty of opportunities to bargain for swords (dao) and other souvenirs, there are a ridiculous number of  shops lined up side to side starting from the edge of town going all the way to the center.

You can also get a nice kung fu habit tailored, take part in kung fu classes put on by daoist master Yuan Xio Gang, get incredible blind massages (wang ren anmo) by master Du Yi Jun (for house calls dial 13972501554). You can also visit the Wudang Museum of China (in Tai He Guang Chang), where you'll find interesting displays and some pretty hilarious chinglish translations describing the mysteries of Daoism with such words as "abracadabra."

Once you decide you want to go to the mountains, you can take one of the three-wheeled tuk-tuk looking things, called ma mu che, up to the gate (shan men kou) for 2RMB.

Just a warning, you'll definitely want to brush up on your Chinese skills before coming here. There's not much English spoken in these parts. Even if you're pretty fluent in Chinese, you might still have a little trouble, the local dialect can be a little tough to understand at times.
