Together the Shide Bridge (Shìdé Qiáo, 世德桥) and Yong'an Bridge (Yǒng'ān Qiáo, 永安桥), first constructed in 1573 and 1619 respectively, form what today is known as the Twin Bridges (Shuāng Qiáo, 双桥).
In a water-town such as Zhouzhuang stone archway bridges are not in short supply. What sets Twin Bridges aside from the competition is they manages to cross two perpendicular rivers—the Yinzi and the Nanbei—and meet in their shared corner. The combination of the round-arched Shide Bridge and square Yong'an Bridge is compared to an old-fashioned key, giving the pair the nickname "Key Bridge."
A popular destination for shutterbugs and flag-following tourist groups, the Twin Bridges became the face of the town for many after an American businessman gave Deng Xiaoping the painting Memory of My Hometown by Ningbo-born Chen Yifei. The nostalgic, impressionist-like painting depicts the town's Twin Bridges and its image was used by the UN.
It's worth a stop on the way to the Zhang Residence or the Shen Residence.
