The original Guangxi provincial museum was founded in 1934, but was forced to move several times after the Japanese invasion. The current provincial museum, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Museum (广西壮族自治区博物馆 Guǎngxī Zhuàngzú Zìzhìqū Bówùguǎn), was built in 1954 on the east side of Minzu Square and renovated in 1978.
Inside the museum, exhibits and artifacts chronicle the history of Guangxi from as far back as the Mesolithic era, or "middle stone age," up into the Opium War and Taiping Rebellion. Notable artifacts include the fossilized "Liujiang man," the earliest modern man found in Asia, and an exhibit hall featuring hundreds of bronze drums, which figured prominently in the culture of early peoples of the region.
