While Hong Kong Disneyland is not for everyone, if you enjoy kitsch and color, you will certainly not be disappointed. Opened in 2005, Hong Kong's popular 126 hectare (311 acre) theme park has four parts: Main Street, U.S.A, Fantasyland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland. Located on reclaimed land in Penny's Bay on Lantau Island, this is the fifth and smallest Disneyland with only around five million visitors each year. In an attempt to be culturally sensitive, Disney incorporated aspects of Chinese culture, customs and traditions in the design and building of the park and resort. Staff speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin and the guide maps are printed with Chinese character, Japanese and English. The park can handle around 34,000 visitors per day, but with less visitors than expected since opening. Various plans for expansion (including three new themed lands due for completion in 2014) are afoot in an attempt to up annual visitors. Recent years have seen visitor numbers increase however and it can't be denied that it's a fun day out for all the family. It's also become an increasingly popular place to have a "fairytale wedding" and begin your "happily ever after"—no big surprise in a country where even McDonalds moonlights as a wedding venue—because, after all, who doesn't love the Mouse?
