If you are traveling with children, this is a good place to visit. The aquarium opened in 2002. Polar bears, penguins, polar belugas and sea elephants are all housed in this cold zoo. Altogether the aquarium has 11 species of 153 polar animals and 3,000 fish. Standing in a 360°glass channel, in one area of the place, you are surrounded on either side and above by thousands of fish. A showcase of 300-odd sharks and performances by dolphins deserve high recommendation as well. In the sea animal section, you can touch fur seals, sea dogs, and even sea lions. It is currently the largest polar aquarium in the world.   more >>

Fujiazhuang Beach (Fujiazhuang Fengjingqu) is Dalian's nicest beach, most famous for its 550-meter-long stretch of white sands and the blue sea lapping against the shore. Further back from the shore are numerous other scenic spots: reefs, islands and forests.    The slightly more remote location of the beach makes it more private and less developed than many other sites. There are speedboats from here to other bays in the area and a few hotels and villas are currently under construction, in response to the increased numbers of travelers and sun-seekers. Get there before it becomes too popular.   more >>

A moving passage guides you through the transparent tunnel surrounded by a colorful array of underwater life: sharks, rays and 200 species of rare fish from around the world. This is a very popular attraction, so be prepared to fight the crowds and the screaming children. There is also a warship model exhibition, a touch zone with ocean beasties, and a doodle room for the kiddies. A highlight of the visit is watching divers feeding the sharks. Recently penguins from the South Pole have hatched their young there.   more >>

Dalian has series of austere public squares, each with a tale to tell. Friendship Square is a celebration of soccer which is Dalian residents' favorite pastime; Charms of the Sea Square commands an excellent view of the sea and the mountains beyond; Olympic Square is dedicated to the first Chinese person to participate in the Olympics (a Dalian native); and Zhongshan Square is famous in the region for its open air performances.  People's Square (Renmin Guanchang) is the largest and most popular of all the city squares. The national flag waves solemnly over various imposing governmental buildings and the monument to the Communist Revolution (a huge statue of a Russian soldier), built to commemorate Soviet Union soldiers who helped re-take the city from Japanese invaders in WWII. Despite this dominant political atmosphere, recent renovations have helped to make th... more >>

In 1932, Liu Changchun, a Dalian local resident, competed in the 10th Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. Liu was the first Chinese to take part in the Olympics. Decades have passed, the spirit of sport loving has been passed down through the generations and now Dalian is known as a "Soccer City" and the "Home of Track & Field".   In September 1999, Mr. Samaranch, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee of the day, attended the foundation-stone laying ceremony for the Square. The rocky, mountainous Liaodon Peninsula coast just outside of central Dalian known as Daheishi is a popular area for climbing, hiking and taking in spectacular views of both the Yellow Sea and the Thousand Hands Buddha, a large statue atop a peak and some 500 luohan statues. Louhan, also known as arhat, are a bit like Buddhist saints: believers who have attained enlightenment and escaped the cycle of earthly rebirths.   more >>
