Jampaling Monastery is home to the largest gathering of monks (around 800 are active here) outside of festival times. Built in 1444 by Sherab Sango, much of the monastery was destroyed in the early 20th century. But thankfully, it has been lovingly restored and inhabited ever since. The collection of murals, statues and other art here is definitely worth a lingering perusal. The temple's location sets Jampaling apart as one of the most scenic monasteries in Tibet. If you hike up the mountain opposite the town, there is a nice view of Chamdo's river confluence (the Lancang and Zachu Rivers join here) and the monastery. more >>

First discovered in 1977, the Karuo Relics Site is the only archaeological site of the Neolithic age discovered in Tibet. Covering an area of about 10,000 square meters, the Karuo site is one of three Tibetan aboriginal cultural relics and is the best-preserved evidence of ancient people living in the Qinghai-Tibet Plain. Archaeologists from home and abroad have unearthed dozens of house remains, two paved roads and tens of thousands of fragments of stoneware, pottery and bones from the site over the years. The Karuo site was listed as a major cultural relics site under state protection in 1996. It is an important glimpse into ancient Tibetan anthropological history and worth a visit, though transportation to the site and facilities at the site are fairly poor. more >>
