1933 (Old Slaughterhouse)   (Shanghai)

One of the most beautiful of all of Shanghai's old buildings, this 1930's abattoir (the largest in Asia when it was built, but long since left to rot) in northern Hongkou district, was reborn in 2009 as a creative-lifestyle destination. Thankfully, its gorgeous art-deco stylings have survived the intrusion of the Ferrari Owners Club.

It's a place to come and marvel at the structure - all concentric circles, impossible angles, and competing shadows - as much as to partake of the retail options; though with an American Apparel, an official Apple reseller, a cigar bar, and trendy restaurants Noodle Bull and El Toro at hand it's much more than mere museum piece.

Admission:Free  Hours:08:30-22:00  How to get there:1933 is at 29 Shajing Lu (near Haining Lu) in Hongkou District. The nearest Metro station is Hailun Lu (Line 4) from where it's a ten minute walk south; but it's not easy to find your way. It's easier to take a taxi to the jiulong binguan, the hotel next door; from central Shanghai (People's Square) it will cost around 25-30 RMB.
