Kunming's hotels were upgraded in preparation for the surge of World Horticultural Expo visitors in 1999 (an event that also saw much of the remaining city's old and traditional buildings cleared away to make room for standard-issue Chinese high-rise construction) and the city today is home to a range of accommodations, from luxurious five-star resorts to budget lodgings and hostels.
The King World Hotel, Golden Dragon Hotel, Harbor Plaza, and the Kai Wah Plaza International Kunming are among the best high-end options. Preferred budget addresses include the Camellia on Dongfeng Lu, the Kunhu Hotel on Beijing Lu and the Yunnan University Guesthouse. These smaller backpacker locales offer loads of travel advice, guided tours and tips on local food, sightseeing and shopping. Kunming hotels mainly cluster on Beijing Lu near the railway station, or near the intersection of Renmin Lu and Baita Lu.
