The Grand Hotel Beijing (Beijing Guibinlou Fandian) is a magnificent former palace that has been transformed into a five-star hotel with a prime location—just a short walk from the Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square to the west and a few blocks from the Wangfujing shopping and food street to the east. The pricier rooms afford excellent views of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen, as well as the major thoroughfare of Dongchang'an Jie.

The Grand Hotel features traditional Chinese architecture, decor and furnishings, making it popular with visitors seeking a sense of Beijing's imperial past. Service and amenities are, generally, up to five-star snuff, though some guests report the occasional signs of wear and tear one might well expect from an older building (the odd odor, spots of worn carpet, wheezy air conditioning). That said, the English-proficient staff is among the friendliest, most professional and most attentive in Beijing, and they have a reputation for going out of their way to please.

The hotel's four restaurants likewise have strong reputations and the Palace View Bar is a must for guests and non-guests alike—there's little better after a long day of sightseeing or deal-making than a cold drink outside on a pleasant evening with a commanding view of the heart of imperial Beijing.
