The Chongqing Jiefangbei Shangye Buxingjie is a broad pedestrian square in the midst of the commercial heart of downtown. 3000 shops line the square and you can take your pick of shopping centers, entertainment, shiny hotels. With the sheer number of stores, you can find pretty much anything you might need from postage stamps, clothes and food to electronic gadgets. If you need a one-stop-shop for supplies for a boat trip to the Three Gorges, Carrefour on Jialefu Chaojishichang is worth a visit for all Western staples—peanut butter, Merlot, camping supplies and a reasonably priced bicycles. Perserved dried beef (Nui Rou Gan) is a favorite local buy. Near Arhart Temple there are some worthwhile night markets.
